Calling all Singers and Instrumentalists

19th September 2014S Burley

Monday sees the launch of the Cardinal Wiseman Area Band. Our woodwind and brass instrumentalists will be working after school with similar instrumentalists from other local schools to create an area band. Under the guidance of our instrumental teachers Mr Birnie and Ms Skinner it promises to be an exciting rehearsal and a great chance for our students to perform as part of a larger group. Our brass and woodwind students already know they have to attend but anyone else interested in joining them should see Mr Gardner for information. Watch this space for details of their progress and performances.

On Tuesday we are launching our new singing lessons and school choir in the first rehearsal of the year. We are really pleased to announce we are working this year with Ms Cooper who many of our students will know from her choirs at St Margaret Mary and Christ the King.

The session will be taking place in the music room (41) at 3:10 until 4:10 and is open to students from all year groups. Mr Gardner, Mr Beckett and Ms Cooper look forward to seeing and most importantly hearing you there.

Year 11 students get Careers Focused

12th September 2014S Burley
Careersevent 1
On Monday 8th September year 11 students took part in a workshop held by the Careers Crowd.  Students were introduced to The National Careers Service, The National Apprenticeship Service, MyKindaCrowd and other online services to help them discover their next steps.  Students were engaged with a hands on voting system and then wrote their own rap, speech or piece of poetry about one of the future paths they could take, check out the videos.  The students thoroughly enjoyed the morning and really began to think about their next steps.
The presenter, Tanya,  had some very kind words to say about our students
“A really pleasant morning session at this school.  I enjoyed working with the Year 11’s as they were very engaged – had fantastic focus and listening skills and were very supportive of each other for the whole morning – excellent team work. I really enjoyed hearing the poems too! Well done Year 11!”

Congratulations!

21st August 2014S Burley

 P1100480

Many congratulations to pupils, parents and staff. You have worked incredibly hard this year and we are delighted with your achievements. Over 74% of our students made at least expected progress in English and over 40% made better than expected progress. Maths was just below this.P1100494

We have a number of students who have achieved outstanding results and deserve particular mention. Roxana Tabin achieved 4A*s, 2As, 2Bs and a C – she will be studying Music at sixth form. Emma Murphy achieved 4A*s, 1A, 5Bs and she will be studying Maths. Kai Mendes achieved 3A*s, 4As and a B. Elizabeth Nicholl achieved 2A*s, 5As and a B. Well done to all of you!

P1100479

We did notice some volatility in Maths this year due to Government changes and are working to check how these changes have impacted on individual results. Our curriculum offer is robust and not built on multiple BTEC awards and we are very happy that 58% of students achieved 5 or more good GCSE grades.
