At the start of each academic year, the Medical Needs Co-ordinator (AE) provides the first aid team and core pastoral team with a register of students who are known to be asthmatic, anaphylactic, diabetic, epileptic or have any other serious illness. An up-to-date file is maintained consisting of medical consent forms for every student in each year and AE ensures that these are readily available for staff responsible for any school trip/outing. Staff members must have a current medical consent form for every student that they take out on a school trip which indicates any specific conditions or medications of which they should be aware. All staff have a responsibility to familiarise themselves with the first aid procedures in operation and ensure that they know who the current First Aiders are. They are also reminded to be aware of specific individual medical care plans displayed in the staff room on the medical notice board (and also communicated, as appropriate, in staff e-mails).
In the event of an accident/serious incident:
The casualty must never be moved unless he/she has been assessed by a qualified First Aider or unless the casualty is in immediate danger.
Send for help to the Main Reception as soon as possible either by person or telephone, ensuring that the messenger knows the precise location of the casualty. Where possible, confirmation that the message has been received must be obtained. Reassure, but never treat a casualty unless that member of staff is in possession of a valid ‘Emergency Aid in Schools Certificate’ or knows the correct procedures; in these circumstances, a staff member can start emergency aid until a First Aider arrives at the scene or instigate simple airway measures if clearly needed. Where an injury has caused a problem, the student must be referred to the Medical Room in reception for examination. In the case of Epi-pen/Asthma emergencies, any member of staff who has attended the up-to-date training can administer medication required.
In the event of a pupil requiring first aid in other circumstances:
Send a student who has minor injuries (with signed planner – and blue corridor pass if from a class – giving permission) to the Medical Room in the Reception Office if that student is able to walk, where a First Aider will see him/her; this student should be accompanied. Send a student who reports to feeling unwell (with signed planner – and blue corridor pass if from a class – giving permission) to the Medical Room in the Reception Office, unless his/her deterioration seems uncharacteristic and is causing concern. It is important for office staff/first-aiders to obtain the history relating to a student not feeling well, particularly in the cases of headaches, to ensure that no injury has caused the student to feel unwell.
Office staff
Office staff will call for a qualified First Aider (unless also qualified themselves and available to help) to treat any injured person, support the First Aiders in calling for an ambulance or contacting relatives in an emergency, keep students who simply do not feel well in the medical room until parents come to collect them or send them back to class if this is not possible and at all times follow school policy on administration of medicines. Pupils do not go home without being collected by their parents. All instances of first-aid are logged, parents are called and accidents (for pupils and staff) are recorded in the Accident Log.
