Why is Religious Education important?

  • Pope St John Paul II’s description of Religious Education as the “core of the core curriculum” emphasizes that RE is not simply one subject among others but the heart of Catholic education.
  • It shapes how all learning is understood and connected to the search for truth and meaning.
  • The Religious Education Curriculum Directory (RECD) highlights that RE forms the whole person — intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually — by helping students discern who they are and the purpose of their lives with Christ at the centre - Omnio Pro Christo
  • Without RE, students would lack an essential dimension of their education, since it helps them integrate faith and culture, reason and belief.
  • A strong grounding in RE also leads to religious literacy, enabling students to engage thoughtfully with other disciplines such as science, history, and even sport, through a theological and ethical lens.

Purpose of Religious Education:

  • Catholic schools place Religious Education (RE) at the heart of their mission to hand on the fullness of the Catholic faith and draw pupils into deeper communion with Christ.
  • RE nurtures intellectual, spiritual, moral, and emotional growth, helping pupils integrate faith and life.
  • It deepens understanding of Catholic theology while encouraging dialogue between faith, culture, and other areas of knowledge.
  • RE forms pupils to engage critically with contemporary society through the lens of the Church’s moral and social teaching.
  • Excellent RE produces religiously literate, reflective, and ethically aware young people who can live out and articulate their faith in daily life

RE results:

Our students have once again performed above national averages in 2025, with outstanding outcomes at every grade level. Some key highlights include:

  • 32% of students achieved Grades 9–7, above the national figure
  • 66% achieved Grades 9–5, above the national average
  • 74% achieved Grades 9–4, again above national performance

Our results have remained consistently strong over the last three years, showing sustained success and improvement over time

Not only did pupils achieve excellent grades, but their progress was exceptional. According to FFT (the national school performance service), pupils made on average nearly three-quarters of a grade more progress than similar pupils nationally. This places our RE results in the top 20% of all schools nationally for pupil progress — a remarkable achievement.

Outcomes from pupil voice completed in September 2025 are also equally positive and have been used to inform the department development plan for the upcoming year. You can see the results here

RE Curriculum:

Our RE curriculum is what sets us apart from other schools and is the reason why pupils achieve consistently outstanding results. You can learn more about our curriculum by clicking on these links below:
