Fortis fortuna adiuvat - Fortune favours the brave

Our school mantra this year is "Fortis fortuna adiuvat", a Latin phrase meaning "fortune favours the brave" or "fortune favours the strong". It suggests that individuals who are brave, take action and pursue their goals with determination are more likely to achieve success.

We see examples of acting with faith and courage in the Bible through figures like David during his encounter with Goliath, Esther and her commitment to her people, Daniel in the Lion’s den and of course the Mother of Jesus, Mary.

All of these people were brave and took bold steps to reach their goal, rooted in their belief that God would stay with them and they inspire us to do the same.

Of course Jesus showed us the ultimate bravery by choosing to suffer and die on the cross, even though He knew the pain and rejection He would face. He stood firm in truth, loved His enemies, and obeyed God's will completely, saying, "Not my will, but yours be done" (Luke 22:42). His courage came from love; love for God and love for us.

A Gift of the Holy Spirit

Courage, also known as Fortitude, is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and it's a powerful spiritual strength that helps us remain faithful and strong, especially in the face of fear, danger, difficulty, or suffering. This gift of the Holy Spirit enables us to:

  • Stand firm and resist both fear and temptation, not by being fearless, but by conquering fear to do what is right.
  • To persevere in the pursuit of good, ensuring that we don’t compromise our convictions when faced with obstacles or opposition

The gift of Courage isn’t about being fearless, it’s about believing that God will be with us when we take that step!

Psalms 8:3-5

3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,

4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?

5 You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honour.

How can we live out our mantra this year?

Our staff can show bravery by modelling moral courage, taking ethical stances, speaking up for what is right, fostering a safe environment for student expression and risk-taking, and demonstrating vulnerability to build trust. Our staff also demonstrate bravery by promoting inclusivity, engaging in challenging conversations, advocating for students, embracing lifelong learning, and creating a collaborative culture where setbacks are seen as opportunities for growth.

Our pupils can show bravery by trying new things, standing up for themselves and others, admitting mistakes, speaking the truth even when it's hard, asking for help, and taking responsibility. They can also show bravery by being themselves and not following the crowd, persisting through challenges, or standing up for their beliefs.

Joshua 1:9

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
